Beauty salons and nail bars set to re-open from Monday 13th July under new guidelines

Great news for beauty salons, nail bars, tattoo studios and physical therapy businesses as last night on Thursday 9th July, the Government announced they can re-open from Monday 13th July following a newly released set of guidelines.

An updated set of guidelines were released explaining what measures are in place to protect clients and staff. However, services to the face such as facial waxing, eyelash treatments and make-up applications are high risk and should NOT be performed, due to an increased risk of transmission.

These new guidelines include the following:

- using screens or barriers to separate clients from each other, and to separate practitioners from clients, such as in nail salons

- operating an appointment-only booking system to minimise the number of people on the premises at any one time

- keeping the activity time involved to a minimum

- increasing the frequency of hand washing and surface cleaning, as well as regularly cleaning equipment or using disposable equipment where possible

- avoiding skin to skin contact and wearing gloves where it is not crucial to the service, such as in nail bars and tanning salons

- maintaining sufficient spacing between customer chairs

- not allowing food or drink, other than water, to be consumed in the salon by customers

- making sure a limited and fixed number of workers work together, if they have to be in close proximity to do their jobs

Businesses will only be allowed to open from 13th July once they have completed a risk assessment and are confident they are managing the risks.

Some key pieces of PPE to consider are face visors, face masks, sneeze screens, portable protective screens, gloves, and hand sanitiser, which will be vital for businesses re-opening as they are classed as “close contact services”.
